Re: "Vandals set fire to steps, school installs deterrent," July 6.

Vandalism appears to be a fact of life today in Vancouver. The most expensive deterrents in the world will do little to stop vandalism especially over the summer period.

My suggestion is to open up green spaces, either on school property or adjacent to school property, as off-leash areas for dog owners. There are not enough off-leash areas in many areas of the city.

The additional traffic around the schools would discourage vandals from hanging about. A win-win situation for both the dog owners, the city and the school boards. No investment necessary other than maybe mounting a receptacle to hold extra bags for scooping up after a dog.
