Sandra Thomas is indeed correct that lower speed limits on Hastings won't stop jaywalkers. It may, however, save lives. Data from Vancouver Coastal Health shows that there is a significant drop in injuries and deaths if a pedestrian is hit by a vehicle going 30 kilometres per hour versus 50 km/hr or even 40 km/hr. The numerous accidents at the intersection of Main and Hastings are certainly not always the fault of drivers-everyone has to share responsibility. That is why we are also looking at ways to change pedestrian behaviour. However, in the meantime, we must do what we can to increase safety at this very dangerous intersection.
