To the editor:

The citizens of Vancouver deserve an explanation from our mayor, councillors and park board commissioners as to why they oppose the proposal for an analysis and calculation of the cost of the park board's plan to take control of the operations and revenues of Vancouver's community centres. Surely in their role as our elected representatives they have the responsibility to ensure the application of good business practices, common sense, and due diligence in the administration, management and conservation of our tax dollars.

There are a large number of volunteers currently involved in the operation of Vancouver's community centres, and their replacement with paid city workers will undoubtedly result in a dramatic increase in operating costs. The taxpayers of Vancouver deserve assurance from the mayor and council that the park board plan has been subjected to a formal cost/benefit analysis, and that it has been confirmed that the plan will result in a net financial benefit to the residents of Vancouver.
