Question for the editor: Central or Canada in CMHC?

A reader called asking about a reference to the "Central Mortgage and Housing Corporation" in our story "What's in a name? Whither Bobolink Park.

A reader called asking about a reference to the "Central Mortgage and Housing Corporation" in our story "What's in a name? Whither Bobolink Park."

The story noted that the Central Mortgage and Housing Corporation was responsible for the development of the post-war Fraserview subdivision. The reader wanted to know if that name was a mistake and that we were in fact referring to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, the federal Crown corporation responsible for developing housing across the country with a special focus on housing for veterans following the Second World War. They are in fact one and the same. "Central" was the original first C in CMHC and was changed to "Canada" in 1979.

That said, the story doesn't make it quite clear that the CMHC we all know and love/hate is the organization referred to. We've amended the story slightly to make that connection apparent.
