A redundant line

Im just heading out to the airport on the Canada Line and the announcement keeps coming up, This train is for YVR Airport. As YVR is the international code for Vancouver International Airport, isnt this somewhat redundant (à la PIN Number and ATM Machine)?

On a bad note

Thanks for the opportunity to vent something here that is really beginning to annoy me. I love music and have played guitar all my life. I have played many shows and people attended them and enjoyed the music by choice; that is, they paid the cover charge and came in to hear the music because they wanted to listen. Everywhere I go now, the sidewalk is filled with people who want to be musicians. They are unfortunately everywhere with their guitars and now, even worse, their sound systems. This is the unfortunate by-product of TV shows like American Idol. On the Drive the other day, there is a young guy singing through a cheesy travel amp blocking the sidewalk out by the market near First Ave. He isnt really a singer but that doesnt stop him crooning his big hit song into a microphone, so now I have to listen to him (whether I want to or not). I decide against shopping at the market (hello, merchant) and head downtown for some sunshine. Downtown at Denman and Davie I reach the beach and the same problem is happening there. Hundreds of people just wanting to relax and get some sun have to listen to some stupid guy with loudspeakers singing his pointless song to the masses. It is an intrusion of peoples space, you clown. To all of the singer/songwriters out there who think that now everyone wants to hear my big hit song, I ask that you attend open mike nights (there is one every night of the week in this city) and not devalue music by giving these performances that are boring and annoying to people. Ever stop to wonder why people dont listen to your music? It is because you have the mistaken idea that you are interesting. Dont inflict your ego trip on the general public. You are wasting our time and yours. Wake up!

Texting addicts

To all the rants: Bicycles ignoring lights, riding on sidewalks, I have seen it; smoking cigs and pot where they should not, seen that too; irresponsible dog owners, oh yeah. I have seen all of these things and more. But I have to wonder about all the pedestrians that complain, just how many of you walk around like zombies texting constantly oblivious to everything around you, banging into people, falling in fountains, etc. Its a selfish addiction. So, stop texting and start living! Before the letters start, I am not jealous. I own a cellphone but it certainly does not control me.

Jersey snore

Have never been any place where people have more to say about where, when or how to wear a sports jersey. Just sayin.

Show some restraint

Never mind aggressive coyotes, we also have aggressive off leash dogs in Pacific Spirit Park. Fortunately they are the exception and the majority of dog owners who walk in this forest are responsible and courteous and their dogs are nice too (I like dogs, by the way). However there was one stupid bitch (the owner, not the dog) who permitted her very large Great Dane to charge at me barking and threatening and did not do a bloody thing to restrain it. When it became clear that he meant to take a chunk out of me I picked up a large thick tree branch to fend it off. Of course the owner was horrified that I would threaten and frighten her darling puppy dog and I had to tell her several times to restrain her dog, which eventually she did, I think because she was more afraid I would bash her darling doggie to prevent a dog attack. Of course she had neither the brains or the courtesy to apologize. I did phone park staff afterward who were sympathetic and helpful. Raves to the Pacific Spirit park staff!

Road hogs

I am tired of the endless debate between cyclists and autos; it is clear that cars will never share the road! Take the corner of Smithe and Thurlow: drivers making the turn to go southbound off Smithe rarely show courtesy to pedestrians who barely have enough time to get away from the grilles of the motorists intent on claiming the clearly marked pedestrian walkway and this despite the fire hall immediately behind it! Today really got me angry, as I cannot race across the street because I have a knee brace and crutches (an inexperienced driver clipped me 11 years ago while I was cycling) as I have just undergone my second ACL surgery. What if it were a police station? Would drivers readily obey the signal then?

Livin in the 80s

Listen up shopkeepers, bar owners, radio station DJs and organizers of Canadas underwhelming Celebration of Light show. Your music selections totally suck and I cant take any more. Stop playing 80s music we are living in 2011 for Gods sake. Move on! Are we all stuck in a timewarp here? And what is your obsession with Phil-bloody-Collins? Sort your act out, youre an embarrassment and you shame this great city.
