Frosty response

Editor’s note: Your responses came fast and furious at the news last week that the City would begin issuing $250 tickets for uncleared sidewalks (“City taking 36 property owners to court for not clearing snow,” Jan. 5, 2017). Here is a selection of comments from our Facebook page.

“can we give the city tickets for doing a shitty job clearing streets?? or how about clearing and dumping snow onto sidewalks when clearing bike lanes - how are people supposed to clear that?? total set up it sounds like/cash grab. seriously some city workers were busy handing out parking tickets - use these people to help salt/sand the streets instead”

“Has the city salted the roads yet... Because I rear-ended a car today at a stop sign at a street that’s been a sheet of ice for the last week. And I know that that street is dangerous and I’m careful as hell.. Had the city been doing their job I would not have to pay 650 bucks out of my pocket for a cracked bumper this morning so f*** you and your $250 fines maybe get out there and start Salt in the f****** roads”

“I like how every single comment is about the City not doing an effective job clearing snow and ice from sidewalks in front of their properties (really? where?) and not doing an effective job clearing streets.
The major roads are doing fine, thank you - and I haven’t seen a side street yet that isn’t passable to vehicles with appropriate tires, driving cautiously.
Homeowners, on the other hand, have had WEEKS to clear snow and ice from in front of their residences. And they only have, what, about ten metres of concrete or asphalt to contend with?
Unless we get freezing rain, or standing water freezes overnight, ice is not an issue if the clearance is done in a timely fashion. Ice forms through the pressure of pedestrians walking over the snow; and melting and freezing over time. Road salt is nice, but it’s not essential if you’re on top of things. [...]”
