Rants: A cull to arms

In reply to last weeks rant suggesting the government cull seagulls: Seagulls are protected under the migratory bird act. About a month ago, we watched as workmen on the roof across from us killed three baby seagulls.

In reply to last weeks rant suggesting the government cull seagulls: Seagulls are protected under the migratory bird act. About a month ago, we watched as workmen on the roof across from us killed three baby seagulls. We called Ottawa, but they do not have anyone here who can take action. If we do not protect all species, including the noisy and messy ones, the world will soon become a silent and sanitary place. Not a pretty thought.

To the anonymous whiner asking for the culling of seagulls: you know, I live in the West End as well and just this morning I was thinking how were actually lucky to have such a unique alarm clock of seagull callings. Im not quite sure how you expect the government to intervene... Seagulls have been around these parts much longer than you have and if you cant handle our indigenous sounds, might I suggest the prairies or tundra?!

To the gull-hating moron who wrote about culling the gulls, give your head a shake! YOU chose to live in the West End. The West End is surrounded by water. Gulls live by the ocean. Case closed. If you dont like this unacceptable noise then MOVE!

Last Friday 5:45pm: biking through Main and Terminal, I was moving at a good pace and ran the light, not by much at all I shouldnt have, momentum was on my side, I motioned to the driver a thank you wave for not gunning it. Clear sailing right on a great night? A guy in a car takes his headphones off and starts beaking at me that I ran the light. I asked why he was so angry, and what the problem was on a clear sunny evening. It turned out I was the poster man for all biking issues in the city. He then proceeded to tell me that myself and all cyclists were privileged. I do feel privileged; privileged that I dont have to deal with assholes like him so often. Vancouver is actually not bad for cycling. I, like many cyclists, have a car too. I cant imagine why he was so angry to wish that the car actually hit me. Maybe he was angry he didnt get to run the light and the cyclist one-upped him. I dont know. Going forward, calm the irrational rage, relax, sit on the beach and enjoy the sunset because the bikes going nowhere. I might even get a unicycle!

Cell phone transmitters at street level, disguised as charging stations? Whos brain wave was this? Oh, I forget, the citys mantra is dumbest city on the planet. Were getting there.

Cant fool me

This is a rave for the two police officers who took the time to block traffic and stand guard over a terrified blue heron chick that was huddled against the northbound median of the Granville Street bridge. At first I was irritated by the congestion, but my cold little heart thawed when I saw the look on that baby birds face and the big tough cops standing on either side of it. Thanks for keeping it safe until animal control could arrive. I hope its now back in whichever beautiful local park it lives in.

To the West Van-looking Mercedes driver who honked long and hard at me for stopping at a green light for an ambulance (that perhaps you didnt hear because your pace of life is too loud), kudos for actually being man enough to pull up and apologize at the next intersection. It definitely lowered your jerk score and made me think there is some humanity in all this Vancouver traffic.

About 16 of us waiting for the westbound C23 bus had queued up in a very obvious line. A young man about 20 in a Chicago Black Hawks baseball cap however hovered near the front and, sure enough, when the bus arrived barged his way in. I told him there was a line and he replied with what line? and an angry scowl. An asshole like that should have been denied entry on a bus that limits the number of passengers. Fortunately no one was denied a seat but still, learn how to friggin behave in this world.
