Will women's field hockey join the modern world? Will Vancouverites realize their transit system isn't so bad after all? Will any story this week move you as much as pet owners with virtually nothing who would give anything to care for their animal companions?
Those are my top three choices for stories to read in the Vancouver Courier this week.
Two of my choices are opinion pieces. The first is from sports editor Megan Stewart who argues that mandatory skirts in women's field hockey are hurting participation rates. Why? Because women say so. The debate continues.
Columnist Michael Geller confesses that as a transportation plebiscite Yes side supporter, life is hard. But he argues that problems with TransLink are not a sufficient reason to vote no and that compared to other cities around the world he's travelled to (and he travels often), we're not so bad off. Is he right? The debate continues.
Finally, travel and lifestyles editor Sandra Thomas unveils a feature close to her heart about pet owners in the Downtown Eastside. It's a sweet examination of people with few material possessions who sacrifice much to maintain the health and happiness of their pets. In return they receive company, unconditional love and focus in their lives. Accompanying the story are photos from photographer Rebecca Blissett. Will this story give you a greater sense of the human story in a challenged community? No debate on that, I hope.
