According to a blog post on the Georgia Straight’s website, which surprisingly had nothing to do with videos of topless protesters, Calgary’s sharp-dressed mayor Naheed Nenshi has won the 2014 World Mayor Prize.
As stated on the World Mayor contest site, “The philanthropic City Mayors Foundation awards the World Mayor Prize every two years to a mayor who has made outstanding contributions to his/her community and has developed a vision for urban living and working that is relevant to towns and cities across the world.”
We’re not sure whether Nenshi receives any cash, cars or crown for his international win, but he does have the satisfaction of beating runners-up Ghent mayor Daniël Termont and Surabaya mayor Tri Rismaharini. Incidentally, Ghent is in Belgium, Surabaya is in Indonesia and we failed Grade 10 geography.
Sadly, Vancouver’s grass-fed beefcake mayor Gregor Robertson didn’t even crack the top 10 — further proof that killing a hobo with your bare hands while on a cough syrup and Pad Thai bender does have consequences.
