Richmond Night Market will return to full-scale tonight

Neon lights will be strung in every corner of the Richmond Night Market – which opens Friday evening - to recreate a 1950s Asian nightlife ambiance.

The market is open for a full season this year after two years of severe restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2019, the Richmond Night Market was fully cancelled, and in 2021, it only ran from July to September.

This year’s theme is Summer Magic Rainbow, “symbolizing a rainbow that usually follows a storm” and brighter days for the market, given the easing of COVID-19 restrictions, said night market owner Raymond Cheung.

Melanie Mark, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport, and Henry Yao, MLA for Richmond South Centre, will be at the night market kickoff on Friday at 6 p.m.

The market consists of more than 500 food vendors, amusement rides, live performances and other entertainment.

New food vendors this year will be selling Vietnamese pizza made with grilled rice paper, Japanese omelettes, traditional Chinese pancakes and German pork hock.

Cheung started the Richmond Night Market in 2000.

The night market will be open Friday to Sunday from April 29 to Oct. 10.
