Block Parties Are Awesome

This rainy Canada Day, I'm warmed by the fresh memories of the block party we had last weekend. This was the seventh time we closed off either end of our block just west of Dunbar St.; it's one of my favourite events of the year.

This rainy Canada Day, I'm warmed by the fresh memories of the block party we had last weekend. This was the seventh time we closed off either end of our block just west of Dunbar St.; it's one of my favourite events of the year. We have a giant potluck dinner – one side of the street brings savoury, the other sweet, and one neighbour who's lived on the block for fifty years makes three giant pots of chili.

Fire truck at our block party - photo

We had a sweet surprise this year when a fire truck came by (invited earlier in the day by one of our neighbours). The firemen were super friendly, and invited kids and adults alike to sit in the cab and check out the back of the truck.

Dude, seriously. You should organize a block party. There are few things more satisfying than knowing your neighbours. Here's all the info you need to set one up!
