Sometimes it feels that in this day and age, there is a digital shortcut replacing traditional analog processes everywhere you look. In some cases, these digital shortcuts can be a great time-saver, yet in others the results can appear painfully generic or - for lack of a better word - cheap. I have all the time in the world for people who choose to achieve a specific effect with laborious analog means over seemingly instant 'filters' or plug-ins'. To make a music analogy, I guess what I'm trying to say is I like the idea and the sound of reverb created by recording a guitar in a large room as opposed to plugging the same guitar straight into your computer and applying a reverb effect after the fact.

Take the below photograph by Ruth and Dave as another analogy. I'm sure there are multiple ways to put an ornate frame around any photograph you wish to using Photoshop. But Ruth and Dave strived to achieve the effect the old-fashioned way: by using an already existing frame and shooting through it. And what a frame it is - this image having been taken at the amazing Dr. Sun Yet-Sen Garden earlier this summer. And I don't have to tell you that the Garden is an amazing place - clearly you can see it yourself Through the square window.
