Halloween events: How to celebrate the spookiest day of the year in Vancouver

Here are some Halloween weekend events taking place in and around Vancouver this year.

Whether you’ve outgrown your trick-or-treating days or want to establish a new Halloween tradition, here are some of the top Halloween events to enjoy around Metro Vancouver this Hallow’s Eve.

1. Pacific Arts Market 

Stop by Vancouver’s Pacific Arts Market this Oct. 31 for some fun and inspiring Trick or Treating!  While getting your treats you can see some beautiful arts and crafts before going back into the night. If you come in a costume we you’ll get a $25 Pacific Arts Market gift card to use on your next visit.

When: 12 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

2. The Empty Chest Haunted Adventure 

The Empty Chest Haunted Adventure takes place over 6 nights this Halloween season and offers the chance to navigate your way through an interactive fantasy world.
 
After you leave the "humble Village of Vancouver," you'll journey to the doom-filled forest filled with a variety of freaky monsters. 

Upon arrival, guests will be welcomed into a large tent tavern where they can enjoy a drink before they embark on their journey. From here, they'll meet an elf who'll give them a bow. They'll learn some basic archery and then move into the course.

This year, guests will travel into the forest in search of the lost knight. This saviour holds the key to your survival --- so you really need to find him. 

When: Oct 29, 30, and 31 
Where: 31515 Harris Rd., Abbotsford
Cost: $250 for a group of six people or $250 per person for VIP 
 

3. Maan Farms Haunted Corn Maze 

If the dark scares you, a terrifying autumn attraction in the Fraser Valley may frighten you to the depths of your soul. 

The popular Halloween offering, known as the "scariest corn maze in Canada," will open in September, long before All Hallows' Eve — and for good reason. Numerous people descend on the farm each year to scream their voices raw, as they are chased by a variety of terrifying creatures through a corn maze under the cloak of night. 

When: Nightly until Monday, Nov. 1.
Where: Maan Farms, 790 McKenzie Road, Abbotsford

4. The PNE’s Caravan of Curiosities

In the dead of night, a Caravan of Curiosities rolled into town… Alongside firebreathers, contortionists and other oddities, a resentful puppet longed to be the star of the show. 

This October, Playland once again transforms into a Halloween-themed experience including thrill rides, creepy décor, scary characters and live performances. You’ll be awestruck by fire and swordplay, incredible stunts and circus arts, while the amusement park crawls with terrifying monsters, mutant carnivores and re-animated dolls who have breached their usual cages.

When: Oct. 29 6 p.m.-12 a.m., 30 6 p.m.-12 a.m., 31 6 p.m.-11 p.m. 
Cost: October 15-31 $44.50

5. HowlOver Canada

This spooky season Flyover Canada is offering a journey across the great white north this Halloween season that includes a spooktacular pre-show. 

HowlOver Canada is suitable for ages four and up, and costumes are encouraged! Organizers add that there will also be "Halloween theming and spine-tingling decorations." Viewers will join Biker Mama the Witch and her band of spooky sidekicks as they soar high above Canada's breathtaking landscapes on the magical eight-minute journey. 

Masks are mandatory, and children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult or guardian aged 14 years or older.

When: September 27 to October 31, 2021
Where: 201 - 999 Canada Place
Cost: Tickets range between $29-$31 but tickets for children are $10 off adult price (age 15 or under and at least 102 cm / 40 inches tall).

6. Halloween Mystery Nights

Downtown Vancouver Mystery Nights return this year with games every night in October! You’ve got three games to choose from: an outdoor murder mystery for Halloween, a superhero adventure game or a play a spy-themed outdoor escape-the-room-style game in Vancouver this Halloween. 

Sign up in teams of 2-6 players and compete for the top score in these fun group activities in Vancouver for Halloween. 

When: The games are run each night in October! 
Cost: $35 per player + GST
Where: That all depends on what adventure you choose!

7. Lost Souls of Gastown

Vancouver's early days were bustling and enterprising. But they were also dark, gloomy and gothic. Discover the more gruesome side of the city's history on this walking tour that explores devastating fires, out-of-control diseases and unsolved murders. There's a strong theatrical element to this tour that brings the past to life in the dark alleys and back streets of Gastown.

Designed for adult audiences, the Lost Souls of Gastown Tour is both a walking tour and a theatre piece. Created by Forbidden Vancouver’s Chief Storyteller Will Woods – and based on documented Vancouver history – the plot weaves through back streets and alleyways to a dramatic finale in the heart of Gastown’s Maple Tree Square.

When: On Oct. 29, 30 and 31, a tour is held each hour and on the hour starting as early as 5 p.m. until as late as 9 p.m.
Where: Tours start at the corner of Water and Cordova Streets, beside Buro Coffee.

Cost: $29 - CA$32

8. Catch a classic Halloween flick at the Rio Theatre 


The independent movie spot is inviting Vancouverites to escape the nightmare and come see a movie this Halloween. The theatre will be showing titles like Beetlejuice, The Witch, and The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

When: Multiple showtimes daily until Oct. 31
Where: Rio Theatre, 1660 East Broadway, Vancouver
Cost: Regular Adult – $15.00. Student/Senior/Child under 13 – $13.00 (bring student/senior ID with you.)

9. Bear Creek Halloween Pumpkin Train 

This family-friendly daytime activity includes a train ride through a decorated forest, as well as treats and pumpkins.

When: Daily until Oct. 31, 10 a.m.- 4:30 p.m.
Where: Bear Creek Park, 13750 88th Avenue, Surrey
Cost: $10 per person, free for children under two (Tickets are first-come, first-served.)

10. Bear Creek Halloween Scream Train 

This evening attraction, meanwhile, is better suited for passengers aged 12 and up. Guests can expect to scream as they ride through a haunted forest complete with "creepy scary actors." 

When: Nightly until Oct. 31, 6:30 p.m. - 10 p.m.
Where: Bear Creek Park, 13750 88th Avenue, Surrey
Cost: $13 per person, tickets available online. 

11. Once Upon a Haunted Sea 

Encounter spooky sea creatures and twisted tentacles floating alongside historic legends and sea lore. Entertain your imagination with a journey into the deep to learn about the true terror of the seas!

When: Open daily until Nov. 8, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Where:  The Gulf of Georgia Cannery National Historic Site, 12138 Fourth Avenue, Richmond
Cost: Regular admission: Adults $11.90 |  Seniors $10.20 | Youth under 17 & Society members: Free

12. Fin-tastic Fall Days at the Vancouver Aquarium 

Don't miss out on Dress-Up Days and trick-or-treat giveaways on Halloween weekend at the Vancouver Aquarium. Let your little ones explore our Trick-or-Trout maze and reconnect with the aquarium’s 65,000 animals.

For health and safety the following costume items will not be permitted: balloons, popcorn, feather boas, straws or stir sticks, bubbles, confetti, sparklers or sequins, beaded necklace (aka Mardi Gras beads), glassware (as props), glow sticks, real or fake weapons or any other sharp objects, scooters.

When: The aquarium is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Last ticket sold at 3:30 p.m.
Where: 845 Avison Way, Vancouver 
Cost: Regular $42, Child $26.25, Student $36.75, Senior $36.75 Infant/Toddler free


13. Eerie Illusions at the Burnaby Village Museum

This October, visitors will see Burnaby Village Museum transformed into a magical world bathed in breathtaking colour, with talking crows, invisible bands and photo-bombing ghouls as part of Eerie Illusions, a Halloween event unlike anything else in Metro Vancouver.

Utilizing state-of-the-art lighting, projections, soundscapes and special effects, Eerie Illusions will amaze and astound visitors of all ages, and showcase Burnaby Village Museum's 10-acre venue as it has never been seen before.

This self-guided, family-friendly Halloween experience is suitable for all ages. Visitors will need to purchase tickets in advance.

Take-out food is available for purchase from our on-site café. In addition, there will be food trucks on site selling snacks such as candy apples and popcorn. 

When: Oct. 29-31, 5-11 p.m.
Cost: Adults $10, children, $5 (Children under two get in for free)
Where: 6501 Deer Lake Ave, Burnaby

14. A Night for all Souls

A Night for all Souls offers a totally unique experience to view a variety of beautiful shrines in honour of the dead. The annual affair is considered at Mountain View Cemetery is considered a non-denominational sacred event, meant to honour souls that have passed on.

When: Oct. 27 to Nov. 1
Where: Mountain View Cemetery - 5455 Fraser Street Vancouver
Cost: Free, but donations are welcome
