A Metro Vancouver shopping centre parking lot is set to transform into a winter wonderland this February in support of the Surrey Hospital Foundation.

For two weekends, including the Family Day long weekend, the Guildford Town Centre will host a Winter Festival in its north parking lot to help raise money for the construction of a new and much-needed Children's Care Centre at Surrey Memorial Hospital.

Visitors can look forward to an outdoor skating rink, plenty of food trucks, and a life-size snow globe. Entry to the festival is free, but skate rentals will cost $5 per pair, with all proceeds going to the foundation.

Jane Adams, President and CEO of the Surrey Hospital Foundation, said since the children’s Health Centre was built in 2001, the population in the community had grown by 50 per cent and it needed to expand its facilities.

"The Centre is undergoing a transformation to increase capacity, allowing us to care for more kids, close to home," she said.

"Thanks to support from the community and generous organizations like Guildford Town Centre, construction has now begun on this exciting project."

Kyla Way, marketing director of Guildford Town Centre, said the centre was happy to host the event, which would connect families across the Fraser Valley and give back to the foundation at the same time.

“We’re excited to offer the Guildford community something complimentary and unique, especially over Family Day long weekend,” she said.
