Mosques are both houses of worship and community centres, so attendees can expect to enjoy a welcoming atmosphere for all, including families. While modest clothing is encouraged, along with respectful head covering, the primary piece of etiquette visitors are asked to be mindful of is the removal of shoes in carpeted prayer areas.
Volunteers will be on hand to guide guests through displays and activity centres, as well as to offer snacks and conversation. Photos are allowed and encouraged.
“In a world with ever-growing stigma and confusion around Islam and Muslims, we want to open our doors, our minds and our hearts to everyone around us, and build a stronger community,” said Asma Mazhar, one of the event organizers.
Mosques across B.C. will be taking part, opening up to the public from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Those wishing to witness the Islamic congregational prayer, plan to attend between 12:30 and 1 p.m. No registration or tickets are required.
