Here's why you see metal knobs attached to concrete and marble ledges

They're the bane of many a skateboarder's existence

Have you ever seen a concrete, marble, metal, or wooden ledge in Vancouver and wondered why it has metal knobs attached to it every two feet or so? They're there to prevent people from skateboarding there, and they were first introduced to Vancouver architecture in the late 1990s.

They're known as skate stoppers, and while there are many different manufacturers the most well-known is the Skatestoppers brand.

A form of so-called "hostile architecture," they effectively prevent skateboarders from sliding and grinding on the ledges, warding off property damage.
