Charlotte Gainsbourg in Julie Bertuccelli's The Tree.

The Tree (L'arbre) is a sweet, family film devoid of the kinds of clichés we are so used to seeing in mainstream sweet, family films. French actress Charlotte Gainsbourg (that I live in a world in which Sandra Bullock won an Oscar for The Bind Side in the same year that this woman didn't even get nominated for Antichrist confounds me) is Dawn, a mother of four who must move forward with her life and family after the sudden death of her husband. Daughter Simone (beautifully played by Morgana Davies) is the embodiment of a girly-tomboy dealing with loss, who find comforts in the preternatural notion that her father's spirit has moved on... to the enormous fig tree that dominates the family's front lawn.

The Tree is playing today at the Granville 7 at 3:30 pm.
