Calgary cafe chain launches Vancouver expansion with four locations in the city

Legend has it the owners were inspired to launch in YYC with a visit to Vancouver. 14 years later they're expanding here, big time.

Calgary's Deville Coffee will open four locations in Vancouver. The first will be the Waterfront cafe at 333 Seymour St in downtown.

It all started with a visit to a cafe in Vancouver, but it's only now that Alberta-based cafe chain Deville Coffee will make its mark here.

Deville Coffee will open four locations in Vancouver, marking a major expansion of the brand that began one province over.

Paul Brassard and Mark Nolan opened Calgary's first Deville cafe in 2008 after reportedly having a great experience at a location of Artigiano (then known as Caffe Artigiano) in Vancouver. The chain has a massive presence in Calgary, with a dozen locations around the city and a thirteenth one in the works for YYC airport. Deville also has a location in Edmonton and one in Kelowna, B.C.

In Vancouver, Deville has announced four outposts: 745 Thurlow (at the 745Thurlow office building at Alberni); The Post (in the former Canada Post redevelopment on Georgia in downtown); Bentall 5; and Waterfront (at 333 Seymour).

It appears the 333 Seymour/Waterfront location will be the first to open its doors this July, though a specific date has not yet been shared on Deville's social media.

The name "Deville" is a play on the French word for city, "ville," and the brand is based on the notion of building community around coffee and food in the city.

Calgarians who know and love Deville appreciate the chain's brewed coffee and espresso drinks, as well as their breakfast fare and pastries.

"Brewing only direct trade coffee beans, our lattes and espresso drinks have been carefully crafted by hand since day one, with ingredients like organic vanilla, and house-made chocolate ganache," says Deville on its site. "Our pastries are delivered daily by the city’s best bakeries, and a menu of fresh, creative, sandwiches and goods round out the menu in our cafes."

It's unclear so far which Vancouver suppliers, if any, Deville will be working with for their cafe's food selections.
