What's that saying? Sometimes when a door closes a window opens?
Sounds like that's what's happening with Vancouver's four-year-old food truck that specializes in East Coast-style chicken parm sandwiches, as the operators of Burdy announced Monday, July 21, their bright yellow "bus" is set to drive off into the sunset in a matter of days.
Calling it "wild news," the Burdy crew apologized for the short notice: "Burdy is officially closing its doors (or in our case, windows) and we will have our final service this Saturday, July 26."
Burdy rolled into service back in 2021, setting up at Container Brewing in East Van.
Originally, though, Burdy was going to be a take-out operation based out of a commissary kitchen when plans got re-routed.
Then the bus opportunity came up, and Burdy has enjoyed a lengthy tenure at Container.
But the bus is heading out of town with new owners, explains the Burdy team.
"The food truck needed to be sold, and summertime is the best window to do that unfortunately. We’re happy to share that the bus is headed to a new home in Penticton, where it’ll keep on rollin’ so maybe you’ll still see it around while on vacation! "
So is Burdy taking flight, too?
"It’s not all bad though. We also have some amazing news to share… this is not the end for Burdy, in fact it’s the beginning of something VERY exciting!" tease the operators, adding that they aren't able to divulge what's happening just yet, but they will be revealing plans for the next chapter, set to unfold next year, via their Instagram (which is @burdyfoodtruck).
They will be doing some Burdy pop-ups, too, before embarking on what's next for the food biz.
"Please know that there will be more Burdy sandwiches in the future!"
The team behind Burdy is comprised of "four friends who have previously worked together in the food industry and frequently got together and would come up with new recipes just to try," the operators told V.I.A. in 2021. Most of them hail from Ontario, where chicken parm sandwiches are popular. They set out to bring the sandwiches to the Vancouver food scene.
The Burdy Chicken Parm Sandwich is made with fried chicken, tomato sauce, your choice of house-made basil or spicy mayo, parmesan and mozzarella cheese, on a toasted brioche bun. The Eggplant Parm Sandwich is stacked the same, swapping chicken for double-stacked fried eggplant with the addition of fresh arugula.
In their farewell (for now) message, they thank the customers who have supported them, as well as Container Brewing for being their location host.
Those keen to try or revisit Burdy before the bus departs can check them out at Container (1216 Franklin St) Wednesday to Friday from 3 p.m. and Saturday from noon until they are sold out each day.
