Gastown's Jules Bistro, which opened in 2007, will close permanently on Dec. 31, 2023, says Chef/Owner Emmanual Joinville

After a 16-year run, Gastown staple Jules Bistro has confirmed it will close for good at the end of 2023.

The business, which has been listed for sale in recent weeks, will shut down after a final night of service on December 31, according to a media release.

Chef/owner Emmanual Joinville, opened Jules back in 2007, and named his Parisian-inspired restaurant for his son.

“Jules has been a labour of love for me since day one and making the decision to bid farewell is a bittersweet one, but it’s time for me to pass the torch to a new generation of culinary talent,” said Joinville. “It is with deep gratitude and love that I embark on the next adventure and enjoy semi-retirement. I won’t say it’s the end, but ‘jusqu’a la prochaine fois’ — until the next time.”

“I am so thankful for all of my staff who have become like family over the years, and the guests who have dined with us since we opened, and I hope to make a few more memories in the days before our last service,” added Joinville.

“We’ve been so lucky to forge friendships with so many regulars and be a part of their celebrations, date nights and special occasions, and it’s an experience I will never forget.”

After surviving the pandemic, the French Bistro faced a challenging setback in April 2022, when a devastating fire ravaged the Winters Hotel across the street from the restaurant. In the aftermath of the blaze - which led to the Winters building being demolished - Jules was forced to close for nearly a month as the neighbourhood's infrastructure was restored.

Jules has long been known as a go-to for classic French bistro fare and wine. The restaurant regularly participated in city-wide dining events and occasions like Bastille Day, Gout de France, and Dine Out Vancouver, among others.

From now through its last day at 216 Abbott St, Jules will be open for business Tuesday to Friday from 3 to 9:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
