For more than 30 years, Kam Wai has been selling dim sum in Chinatown.
Currently, the family-run business at 249 E Pender St. has a variety of frozen and ready-to-eat options for longtime fans of their dim sum to take away, but a sit-down restaurant is coming soon, in another part of town.
Signs are up for Kam Wai at 2285 E Hastings St, at the edge of the Hastings-Sunrise neighbourhood for the new restaurant, filling in where Viet Thanh Supermarket closed a few years ago.
The signs announce the new restaurant will be known as Kam Wai Legacy, indicating a slight difference from the Chinatown location, which is known as Kai Wai Dim Sum.
Kam Wai has, in some form, been selling dim sum in Chinatown since 1991.
"A lot has changed in the neighbourhood since then, and we’ve changed with it; but the importance of food, family and connection remain a central part of who we are as a family-run company," reads the Kam Wai website.
