Local retro donut chain expanding to former Metro Vancouver Pizza Hut

"We plan on making it Vancouver's premier donut destination," co-owner says

Vegas Donuts is opening a new location. The Metro Vancouver donut shop is taking over a former Pizza Hut in Burnaby.

An empty Pizza Hut in Metro Vancouver will soon be the newest outpost for Vegas Donuts.

Vegas Donuts, launched by the McBean brothers Mike and Steve last year, is a Las Vegas-themed retro donut shop with family ties, as the brothers' grandparents owned a shop in Sin City in the 1960s.

The original Vegas Donuts opened on Knight Street, and while a second location on Robson Street didn't work, a new location in Maple Ridge has been popular, Mike McBean tells V.I.A. The donut shops produce 75 different flavours of donuts (not all at once).

Now they're taking over 4775 Hastings St. in Burnaby, a former Pizza Hut that's been empty since before the pandemic (mostly, though it's been used as a set and a political campaign).

"We plan on making it Vancouver's premier donut destination," McBean says.

The plan is to open the new Vegas Donuts on Oct. 1. It'll include a kids zone for birthday parties, along with an expanded menu with hot dogs and soups.

"People love soup, and it's hard to get a good soup around that area," says McBean.

He says there are other ideas they're looking at, including a drive-thru window at the Burnaby location (the window is already installed) and savoury donut sandwiches (staff already make them for themselves).

"We take a plain ring donut, our yeast ring donut with no glaze on it. And it's not that sweet, so we cut it in half," says McBean. "We make wonderful sandwiches. We've been doing it for a while."

He says they're still toying with the idea.
