In a city renowned for its seafood, Rumble Fish fills a bit of void in the restaurant market.
The just-opened East Vancouver spot is serving up a simple menu of high quality seafood––salmon, cod, Humboldt squid––in approachable preparations.
You could easily call Rumble Fish a "fish & chips joint," and while they are frying up battered cod and salmon pieces paired with a pile of skin-on chippy shop chips (aka fries) and a tangy tartar sauce, the seaside staple is just the beginning.
"We're trying to offer more than just fish and chips in the world of seafood," Rumble Fish owner Tyson Reimer told V.I.A. in a previous interview.
To that end, the longtime old Red Wagon space at 2296 E Hastings St has been transformed into a cool counter-service hang with easygoing vibes, friendly staff, and a menu that puts seafood in the spotlight.
Alongside the fish and chips, the Rumble Fish menu includes a crispy cod sandwich, tender fried Humboldt Squid, a grilled salmon sandwich, prawn rolls, fried fish tacos, tuna poké, and a "bento box" featuring miso-glazed sablefish with rice, edamame, and slaw.
For drinks, they've got local and conventional pop and some fun house-made options, like slushies and iced tea.
It's early days for Rumble Fish (case in point, the staff shared that the sablefish was being plated in a basket temporarily until their order of proper bento boxes arrives) but already it seems to be a welcome addition to the evolving neighbourhood and a great spot for a casual meal or seafood take-out.
While Vancouver shines with its many sushi restaurants or high-end seafood destinations, this simplified and accessible approach to casual seafood fare is a welcome addition to the neighbourhood and the scene.
Rumble Fish is open Tuesday through Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Follow them on Instagram: @rumblefishyvr.
