The future appears uncertain for the most iconic burger joint on the North Shore.
The property at 1550 Philip Ave. in North Vancouver – home of the Tomahawk Restaurant – has been listed for sale at $6.5 million.
A real estate listing describes the “ideally situated redevelopment site” with a one-storey wood-frame building “currently operating as a restaurant.
“This unique and attractive property in one of the North Shore’s fastest-growing neighbourhoods is ideal for owner use, particularly a restaurant with long-term redevelopment potential,” the listing reads.
The listing notes the rapidly changing surrounding neighbourhood, with a new 12-storey hotel and 37-storey mixed-use building slated for construction on Capilano Road.
Currently, the Philip Avenue property is zoned for around 30,115 square feet of residential and commercial space, with a maximum floor space ratio of 1.75, reads the listing, which adds that the District of North Vancouver is reviewing its official community plan.
On the Tomahawk’s Facebook page, the restaurant said there’s still plenty of time left to grab some Yukon-style bacon.
“Don’t worry, we’re absolutely planning to be open for our 100th anniversary, next year,” the Monday post reads.
The Tomahawk was founded in 1926 by Chick Chamberlain, and was later passed down to his son Chuck. The restaurant is now in its third location.
The Tomahawk’s striking totem poles were given to the business by the late Chief Joe Mathias. The poles have followed the restaurant from its original location on Marine Drive, and were repainted by the chief’s grandson.
