Spot prawn, seafood foodie event coming to Richmond

Tourism Richmond is asking restaurants to take part in its inaugural seafood-focused "dine about" event.

Tourism Richmond is hoping local restaurants jump on board a locally focused food event – the first-ever Spot Prawn and Seafood Celebration.

The “dine about” event will run from May 18 to June 5, and Richmond restaurants that want to participate will have to feature a main course or appy made from local spot prawns or other local seafood.

Tourism Richmond is now calling on restaurants to join the event – with a deadline of April 8 to sign up.

So far, several Steveston restaurants, including Steveston Seafood House, Britannia Brewery, Shady Island and Blue Canoe, are participating.

But Ceri Chong with Tourism Richmond said she hopes restaurants from all across Richmond join in.

Chong said one of the aims of the event is to tell the story of local food, highlighting the local fishing industry.

“I think people are more conscious about where their food is coming from now than they used to be,” she said, for example, with farm to table restaurants growing in popularity.

Chong hopes the event will be popular enough to continue for years to come.

Tourism Richmond isn’t setting a price limitation for the seafood dishes – that will be up to individual restaurants to decide, Chong said.

Restaurants can opt to have more than one seafood dish, but Tourism Richmond will feature only one in its promotional material.

Tourism Richmond has a list of local producers that can supply the seafood, or if a restaurant has another supplier, Tourism Richmond will let them know if they can use it during the “dine about” event.

The deadline for restaurants to apply for this program is Friday, April 8.
