'Not by choice, but by change': After nearly a decade, Tacofino is closing one of its Vancouver locations

"It’s not goodbye, it’s just so long for now."

There are only a few months left to enjoy Tacofino's signature tacos and burritos at one of its oldest Vancouver locations, as the Tofino-born restaurant biz has just revealed it will close its Burrito Bar and Taco Bar in Gastown this summer.

“After a decade of great food, amazing people and lots of laughs, our doors will soon close, not by choice, but by change” said Gino Di Domenico, Managing Partner of Tacofino, in a media release.

That change is an expiring lease for its 15 W Cordova St location, explains Tacofino. Redevelopment plans for the building are uncertain, adds the restaurant. The location sits on Blood Alley Square, and was the former location of the Pig & Whistle before Tacofino moved in.

The Gastown Tacofino opened in January 2015, marking a notable expansion for the business, which started in Tofino as a food truck.

Tacofino has enjoyed significant expansion in Metro Vancouver and B.C. Most recently, they've opened up in Squamish, Burnaby, and Langford, with plans to open this year in White Rock. Tacofino also operates five other restaurants in Vancouver: Gastown, East Vancouver, Yaletown, Mount Pleasant, Kitsilano, and Downtown. They also have a Victoria location, a seasonal pop-up on a Victoria golf course, and their original Tofino truck.

As far as sticking around in Gastown, Tacofino says that's a possibility, though nothing is in the works at this time.

"It’s not goodbye, it’s just so long for now," hints the restaurant's closure announcement.

“We’re open to the idea down the road provided the circumstances are right,” said Di Domenico of opening another Tacofino location in Gastown.

In the interim, as closure looms, the restaurant plans to have a lively summer with several fun chances to enjoy the space before its no longer Tacofino.

“Tacofino Gastown was more than a restaurant to me, it is home to memories I’ll carry forever. To our team and community, our heart; thank you. Each of you shaped this journey. Here’s to the good times past, and to new adventures to come," added Di Domenico.

The last day of business for Tacofino's Gastown location will be August 18, 2024.
