It's been a harrowing month for the team at Song by Kin Kao

The award-winning Thai restaurant was forced to close temporarily on July 27, following a fire in the building at 317 E Broadway.

"This has been one of the hardest chapters in our journey, but also one of the most humbling," shared Song's operators on social media Tuesday, Aug. 19.

But the restaurant was also able to share some welcome good news: They have set August 29 as re-opening day.

Restaurant re-launch 'will be a celebration of resilience'

"We cannot wait to fill the room again with laughter, conversation, and the energy that only you bring. The first meal we serve after reopening will be more than just food—it will be a celebration of resilience, community, and the bonds that carried us through," Song's team added in the announcement.

Song, a sibling to Commercial Drive's popular Kin Kao, opened in November 2021. In October 2023, it landed on the inaugural Michelin Guide list of Vancouver restaurants in the "Bib Gourmand" category, signalling great value, and has remained on the list in each of the ensuing years.

The restaurant is know for its "approachable but unique-to-Vancouver Thai food," as Song co-owner Terrence Feng told V.I.A. in 2021. Diners can opt for the set menu, served family style and offered at $75 per person, or the a la carte menu, with dishes like Crispy Taro Rolls, Green Curry Beef, Crab Fried Rice, Pad Thai, and fresh oysters.

Campaign for staff raises over $13K

After the fire, the whole Song team was out of work while repairs to the century-old building were happening.

Feng launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds to support the Song staff, which ultimately raised just over $13,300.

Fortunately, no one was hurt in the blaze, and Feng and the Song crew have continually expressed gratitude to their customers and supporters.

"From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for believing in us and standing by us when we needed it most. We can’t wait to welcome you back home," said the Song team on social media this week.
