Cypress and Angus Streets are largely residential streets that cross Vancouver in the north-south direction. They extend from Kitsilano to nearly the Arthur Laing Bridge and Richmond.
One of my favourite ways to traverse Vancouver from the downtown/Kitsilano area into Richmond is the combination of Cypress and Angus Streets.
Both streets run parallel to the Arbutus Greenway, which is another wonderful route to take.
Cypress and Angus, however, have the benefit of fewer vehicles/commuters and therefore, can be faster.
If going north to south, they are uphill from Kitsilano to basically 41st Avenue. The incline isn’t continuous; there are long flat stretches. The incline itself is also very forgiving and shouldn’t be a concern to any cyclist.
The roads are wide and spacious, even with the parked cars, and the trees provide a beautiful “tunnel” for most of the year.
I generally take Cypress from the Kitsilano area up until just before King Edward Avenue. The signs for the bike route will naturally have you transition from Cypress Street to Angus Street via Matthews Avenue. Upon crossing King Edward Avenue, you follow Angus all the way into the Marpole area. As noted earlier, the Arbutus Greenway runs parallel to both streets, so you can also head west and jump on the greenway if it suits you better.
