Surrey fugitive with 10 warrants at centre of serious multi-vehicle crash in Vancouver

A traffic stop turned into a multi-vehicle crash and foot pursuit in Olympic Village Tuesday night

A serious multi-vehicle collision that closed multiple intersections in Vancouver on Tuesday night has led to the arrest of a Surrey fugitive.

Vancouver police say an officer was on patrol near Main St and Terminal Ave when he initiated a traffic stop, according to a Wednesday morning media release.

Behind the wheel was a 29-year-old Surrey man with 10 Canada-wide warrants, including charges for firearms and drug trafficking.

The driver allegedly fled in the vehicle, striking multiple other cars before colliding with a building near Quebec Street and East 2nd Avenue, according to the Vancouver Police Department.

Vehicle parts and debris were scattered across the road and multiple evidence markers were placed in the middle of the street.

Officers taped off multiple intersections along E 2nd Avenue including at Manitoba, Ontario and Main streets.

Investigators were surveying the scene and Vancouver Police urged the public to avoid the area.

Following the crash, the suspect had fled his vehicle but was arrested a short distance away by a Vancouver Police K9 officer.

Three people who were travelling in vehicles involved in the crash were taken to hospital after they were struck by the fleeing fugitive driver.

A man, 34, and a woman, 30, suffered head and suspected internal injuries when their eastbound Mercedes was struck in the intersection. A 20-year-old woman suffered less serious injuries when her vehicle was also struck, describe the VPD.

The suspect was taken to hospital for treatment after being apprehended by the police dog. The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. has been notified.
