The latest report from Statistics Canada shows the number of police-reported hate crimes across the country went up 37 per cent in the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic compared with the previous year.

Richmond RCMP is investigating an alleged assault that developed from racial language being used.

Officers were called around 4:25 p.m. to the 2900-block of Steveston Highway, between Seventh Avenue and the West Dyke Trail, on May 1 when a man allegedly made racial comments to a victim about his Indigenous heritage at a family event.

The victim was allegedly assaulted when he confronted the other man who made the comments, according to a Richmond RCMP news statement.

The suspect left in a vehicle before officers arrived, but RCMP was able to identify him, and he has since been arrested and released on an “Undertaking with conditions.”

“There are allegations that following the assault, the victim allegedly threatened the suspect while brandishing a knife,” reads the statement.

Richmond RCMP spoke to several witnesses about this incident but believes more people saw the incident and are asking them to come forward.

The investigation is active and ongoing.

Anyone who may have been a witness, or having information on this case, are asked to called the Richmond RCMP at 604-278-1212 or anonymously via Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477 while quoting file number 2022-11378.
