Charges of wilfully resisting or obstructing a peace officer and assaulting a peace officer have been dropped against a man accused in connection with a June 2021 English Bay incident.

The charges were laid against Anthony Thomas King and Chas Kayin Verrier.

Charges against King have been dropped.

Vancouver provincial court records show an Aug. 22 stay of proceedings for King. Staying a charge typically means prosecutors have determined that a conviction is unlikely.

The charges resulted from a situation where Vancouver Police Department beach patrol officers were called to investigate a large fight and a possible assault involving 10 people on the evening of June 18.

As officers were trying to defuse the situation and disperse the crowd, one man, later identified as Chas Verrier, began causing a disturbance, eventually resulting in his arrest.

That arrest allegedly caused dozens of beachgoers to surround the police, making the situation extremely volatile, the VPD said in a media release at the time.

Verrier appeared in court Aug. 26.
