The BIL Vancouver conference is coming back for its fifth year this weekend.
Taking place this Saturday April 14th, it's a direct response to the $8,000-per-ticket TED speaker conference which the organizers view as being aimed at the elite. BIL self-describes as an "Annual quirky, populist, participant driven, unconference" featuring "a wild mix of technologists, scientists, artists, hackers, and those with a passion for community awareness, social entrepreneurship, and innovation."
Since their entire event is a counter-culture takedown of TED it only makes sense that their logo is also a jab. If you've been paying attention, it's very similar to the City of Vancouver's ill-fated rebrand from a couple years back which caused a kerfuffle.
It's brilliantly not subtle, and the designer tells me it was intended to be a "misused disobedient repurposing" of the City's logo. The fact that the original CoV logo rebrand cost taxpayers the same as a ticket to rival TED ($8,000) adds a layer.
BIL should be an interesting way to spend your Saturday, if not a bit unorganized (the title of the person heading it up this year is Chief Executive Unorganizer).
Tickets are, of course, free by donation.
