Body of missing woman found on Burnaby-New West border

The 44-year-old New Westminster woman had been missing since February

The body of a 44-year-old New Westminster woman reported missing in February was found on the banks of the Fraser River near the Burnaby-New Westminster border Sunday afternoon.

Queensborough resident Nirla Sharma was reported missing on Feb. 25.

New Westminster police confirmed Monday morning that a body reported by a member of the public just after 4 p.m. Sunday was believed to be Sharma’s.

“This is a tragic conclusion in the search for Mrs. Sharma,” Sgt. Jeff Scott stated in a press release. “At this time, there is no evidence of foul play, but the cause of death is yet to be determined. The New Westminster Police victim assistance unit is providing support to the family during this very difficult and sad time. We would like to thank the public for their efforts and assistance, and we understand that this news is difficult for everyone.”

Scott said New West police and the BC Coroners Service is now working to determine the cause of death.
