'One-day wonder': Temperatures could crack 30 C in Metro Vancouver this week

'Temperatures will shoot up.'

Summer temperatures are likely in Vancouver this week, but only for one day.

"We have a slightly warmer week ahead of us, but we have another round of showers first," Environment Canada meteorologist Yimei Li tells V.I.A.

Showers are expected to start overnight on Sunday, May 25, and continue into Monday morning, she explains. Those showers could last into the early afternoon around Metro Vancouver, she adds, but they'll be light, with at most 5 mm falling over the entire period.

While it won't be too wet, the clouds and showers will keep temperatures down, with a high of 18 C forecast for Monday afternoon.

Mid-week one-day heat wave

Those clouds and showers will have cleared out for the most part by Tuesday, May 27, and things will be a bit warmer. A high of 18 C is expected closer to the shoreline, while temperatures will likely hit the low 20s inland, reaching as high as 24 C.

But that will just be a preview of the midweek heat.

"Wednesday is a one-day wonder," Li says. "Temperatures will shoot up to mid- to high-20s."

"Inland sections could potentially reach the low 30s; we are looking at a pretty warm day on Wednesday."

Currently, Weatherhood is predicting a high of 30 C on Wednesday, May 28, in areas like East Vancouver, Newton in Surrey, and Coquitlam's city centre.

And back down

The heat will not be sticking around, though.

A high of only 18 C is expected Thursday, as a new trough forms near Vancouver, bringing instability to the weather. That means light showers and clouds are likely.

"It'll be almost a 10-degree drop on Thursday," Li says of the difference between Wednesday and Thursday's highs.

Because of the back and forth, there's some uncertainty for Friday and Saturday, Li says, but currently it's looking like a mix of sun and clouds with highs in the low 20s.

The daytime highs throughout the week may range, but overnight lows are expected to be pretty consistent and remain in the low teens.
