How Vancouver is managing invasive species (VIDEO)

These plants may look pretty, but they don't belong here. 🌱

There's a battle brewing in North Vancouver. The fight is against little green invaders that aren't from outer space, but from other parts of our world - and they don't belong here.

Invasive species are often recognized as major factors in the loss of local biodiversity. Maplewood Flats Conservation Area hosts two particular plants significantly impacting the region. Research shows Himalayan blackberry and English ivy are reducing native plant species diversity and bird presence in the park.

So what does this all mean? Ultimately, established invasive species can reduce diversity in ecosystems, causing them to lose resilience.

Conservationists are also working closely with the Tsleil-Waututh Nation to ensure native species are replanted in a culturally appropriate manner. While ecological management is a complex - and often controversial - issue, stewards continue to monitor and manage the situation to ensure a healthy habitat.
