Lightning, thunder possible in Metro Vancouver forecast

Aug. 31, could see some lightning over Vancouver, but not much

Vancouver could see lightning tonight, Aug. 31, 2025.

While Metro Vancouver has been warm and muggy lately, an afternoon lightning strike or two is possible Sunday, Aug. 31.

The short-term forecast for the city shows the potential for lightning in the region from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., says Environment Canada meteorologist Philippe-Alain Bergeron.

"We'll see some light showers through the afternoon and into the evening," says Bergeron. "And there's the potential for very isolated thunderstorms."

He notes there's already been one "lonesome lightning strike" this afternoon.

While thunder and lightning are possible later today, Bergeron notes it won't be a severe storm. The showers that are expected in Metro Vancouver won't be severe, either, with only up to 1 mm falling.

They'll last into the night, and isolated areas could still see some showers tomorrow morning, Sept. 1.

It's due to an "upper low" system off the coast of the continent.

"It's just spinning its wheels," says Bergeron. "It's not going anywhere today and tonight."

By tomorrow morning, it's expected to move off, and a new ridge of high pressure is predicted to form up.

Today's high is expected to be 22 C, and a low of 16 C is expected overnight.
