Massive outdoors comedy event proposed for Stanley Park

The first one was organized in Edmonton in 2021.

A new comedy event is being proposed for Stanley Park.

A field of crickets would not be good for comedy, but how about a cricket field?

The organizers of the Great Outdoors Comedy Festival (GOFC) are proposing the Brockton Cricket Fields play host to a great comedy festival outdoors this September.

The original GOFC was held in 2021 in Edmonton; since then it's grown to Halifax and Calgary as well, with headlines like Amy Schumer, Jerry Seinfeld, and Bill Burr. Kelowna is due for one soon, as well.

Currently, a Vancouver festival depends on a decision from the Vancouver parks board; a report on the festival proposal is on the agenda for the March 27 meeting. Organizers want to host the event from Sept. 15 to 17, 2023.

The three-day festival would open daily at 5 p.m. and shut down at 11 p.m., with around 10,000 guests each day. Tickets would range from $69 to $399.

"The vision for the Festival is to create an inclusive and safe experience that celebrates and features all forms of performance comedy, from local talent to star attractions," states the report from parks staff.

It also notes the festival has raised money for local charities in its host communities.

Staff notes the fields have often hosted large-scale events and make the city and park a "desirable major event venue" like Central Park in New York City and Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.
