Metro Vancouver border crossing remains closed due to protest

The Pacific Highway Border Crossing remains closed due to anti-vaccine mandate protesters gathering at the major gateway to the USA

The Pacific Highway Border Crossing remains closed due to anti-vaccine mandate protesters gathering at the major gateway to the USA.

Normally a busy area, webcams of the border crossing show little activity save for a couple of groups of vehicles blocking the road, some police standing near their vehicles and a few people wandering around, occasionally down the empty highway.

A small group of protesters stayed at the border crossing overnight after a larger group gathered Saturday, Feb. 12. During that protest, some of the group broke through the police barricade at the scene. Police are investigating those actions.

"Police continue to monitor the situation alongside our provincial and federal RCMP partners as well as the Canada Border Services Agency," states the Surrey RCMP detachment.

Local Mounties are advising people in area to avoid the border crossing area and warn of traffic congestion. There is no access to several streets in the area, including:

  • 176 Street from 8 Avenue
  • 0 Avenue is block at 84 Street to westbound traffic
  • 172 Street is blocked at 8 Avenue to southbound traffic

The province's DriveBC website will be updated with information about the blockage. At the time of publication, the situation was noted as a "public demonstration" had closed Highway 15 (the Pacific Highway) in both directions.
