Metro Vancouver school students released after 'serious assault' on staff member

Classes have been cancelled for the rest of the day.

Surrey RCMP are continuing to investigate an assault at a Surrey school this morning that left a school employee with serious injuries.

At 8:25 a.m. on March 13, Surrey RCMP and the Lower Mainland Emergency Response Team responded to a report of a serious assault with a weapon on a member of school staff at LA Matheson Secondary School. The injured employee was taken to hospital and is in stable condition.

In order to complete a security sweep, RCMP locked down LA Matheson school earlier today. The lockdown has been lifted and students were released. However, classes have been cancelled for the rest of the day. 

In a release, RCMP state that they, "believe that this incident involved a single suspect and they are currently working on obtaining all available descriptions of that person. Further information on the suspect will be released following the completion of critical witness interviews.

The suspect was seen leaving the school grounds in a dark grey Kia sedan.  Anyone who may have witnessed the vehicle leaving, or may have CCTV or dashcam footage is asked to call Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502.
