The Government of Canada has issued a travel advisory for the Netherlands after a shooting in the tramway in Utrecht resulted in several casualties.

The advisory states that travellers should, "exercise a high degree of caution in Netherlands due to the current elevated threat of terrorism."

This risk level indicates that the Canadian government has identified safety and security concerns or that the safety and security situation could change with little notice.

Furthermore, the advisory notes that the situation is still 'evolving,' and that travellers who are in a safe place should remain indoors. In addition, it notes that they should follow the instructions of local authorities and monitor local media, including social media, for updates.

The warning also cites that, "there is a threat of terrorism in Europe. Terrorists have carried out attacks in several European cities and further attacks are likely." As a result, travellers are advised to always be aware of their surroundings and to be particularly vigilant during big events.

Targets could include:

  • government buildings, including schools
  • places of worship
  • airports and other transportation hubs and networks
  • public areas such as tourist attractions, hotels, restaurants, bars, cafés, shopping centres, markets and other sites frequented by foreigners

The Dutch authorities have also set up a hotline. If needed, call +31(0) 88 269-0000.
