New sign adds splash of colour, light to Kitsilano corner

Peace, Love, and Kits Beach are among the directions pointed out on a new sign

A new directional sign in Kitsilano is adding some bright colours to Vancouver's West Fourth Avenue.

The sign, at W 4th and Yew Street, has been erected by Low Tide Properties, local billionaire Chip Wilson's real estate company.

With design cues from Las Vegas's famed welcome sign, and colours reminiscent of Vancouver's neon era, the bright sign offers a bit of retro chic in the trendy Vancouver neighbourhood.

The directional sign points to the direction of six locations (or seven, if you include the rotating arrow that points to Kits Corner), though two of those locations are love and peace. Each direction is highlighted by a colourful light.

"Love" is located somewhere directly east of the sign (perhaps coincidentally, there's a Lululemon store that direction), and "Peace" is somewhere southeast (perhaps Shaughnessy, by the angle of the arrow).

The other four locations listed are beaches in or near Kitsilano: Kits Beach, Jericho Beach, Sunset Beach, and Wreck Beach. Spanish Banks Beach does not appear to make the cut.

Given the location of the sign and a couple of the beaches (like Kits Beach), it may not be entirely useful to follow the exact bearing suggested.

Kits Corner isn't just the words on the sign; it's also the name of the Low Tide property next door, housing Parallel 49 Coffee and others. Apartments in the building run about $2,800 for a 595 sq. ft. one-bedroom unit or $3,600 for an 870 sq. ft. two-bedroom unit.
