More details have been confirmed for the school expected in the Olympic Village community.
The province has announced $150 million for the project which will see a brand new school built with a capacity for 630 students in the neighbourhood.
"This much-needed funding will contribute to the well-being and success of students, while supporting our vision for a thriving educational system that supports families in their local communities throughout Vancouver," said Vancouver School Board chair Victoria Jung in a press release issued by the B.C. government.
The new school will be a four-storey building with a neighbourhood learning centre and space for child care, according to a press release.
The project also has a 99-year lease from the city for a plot of land next to Hinge Park on Columbia Street on the Olympic Village's west side. It was identified as a potential school location in 2007.
It's expected to be finished in 2029.
A community campaign has been pushing for the school for years.
Along with the announcement about the $150 million in funding for the Olympic Village school, the province also promised $15 million in new funding for Henry Hudson Elementary in Kitsilano. The school is currently being rebuilt; a six-classroom addition has been approved with space for 145 additional students.
Last year, the old 1912 yellow one-room schoolhouse on the Henry Hudson site was saved and relocated to the North Shore.
The Henry Hudson rebuild is expected to be finished in 2025.
