Police dog searches car in Burnaby after cocaine found

Burnaby RCMP gang enforcement team detained driver of car 'doing evasive manoeuvres'

Cocaine within reach of the driver led officers to call in a police dog to search a car in Burnaby last night.

Members of Burnaby RCMP’s gang squad noticed a car acting suspiciously, “doing evasive manoeuvres” in the Brentwood area just after 10:30 p.m., according to spokesperson Cpl. Mike Kalanj.

When the vehicle parked, officers approached the driver who got out of his car, Kalanj said.

“He was acting oddly, and he was eventually detained for safety because they believed he could have a weapon, and that led to a quick search,” Kalanj said.

When cocaine was discovered within reach of the driver’s seat, a dog was called in to search the vehicle thoroughly.

The dog discovered more cocaine and a quantity of cannabis, according to Kalanj, but not enough evidence was found for drug trafficking charges, he said.

The man was released at the scene.

Kalanj said the gang team members had not pulled the man over because of suspected gang ties.
