Update: Man dies after being shot by police on East Hastings

A 37-year-old man was shot by police after brandishing a weapon in public.

A police incident this morning ended with one man dead after being shot by police at the intersection of East Hastings and Princess streets.

The incident started before 5 a.m., according to a press release from the Vancouver Police Department (VPD). Ambulance personnel were on the scene and called police for assistance with a 37-year-old man "acting erratic and aggressive."

The man had reportedly smashed a window in his residence and was tossing large, wooden objects into the street, according to the release, injuring himself in the process.

“Before police arrived, the man had left his residence and went to the street with a weapon in his hand,” says VPD Cst. Tania Visintin in the release. “Reports came in that this man was chasing people with the weapon and using it in an aggressive and threatening manner."

"The man was subsequently shot by police."

In response to the shooting, the Independent Investigations Office has been called in.

The intersection is closed in all directions to traffic and the VPD is asking the public to avoid the intersection. TransLink has also alerted riders the incident will affect routes travelling through the area. The section of East Hastings Street between Jackson Avenue and Princess Street is also blocked.

Photos from the scene show police surrounding the intersection, with police tape around a bus stop on East Hastings Street and what appears to be blood on the sidewalk.

The incident occurred near where police shot a man carrying a firearm this weekend.
