Police investigating after swing chains cut at Vancouver park

The city says a Tiger Dam was also damaged.

Vancouver police are looking into an unusual case of vandalism.

Over the weekend, the Vancouver Police Department launched an investigation after seeing posts on social media that chains had been wholly or partially cut on swings located at the playground adjacent to Kitsilano Beach.

"It appears the chains to some swings and a chain ladder were intentionally cut," state the VPD in an email to V.I.A.

They note that this would be considered "mischief" and considered a criminal offense. At this time the police don't have much information, as the investigation is in its early stages.

The parks board says the swings that could be repaired have been, but there are some that need to be replaced by park crews.

"Some of the swing belts and chains have been damaged beyond repair and will need to be replaced," writes a parks board spokesperson to V.I.A.

At the same time, notes the parks board, a Tiger Dam used to protect Kitsilano Pool's mechanical room from flooding was also badly damaged.

Due to the damage, crews had to remove the dam. It will be repaired or replaced at a later date.

"The Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation is extremely disheartened by these senseless acts of vandalism and strongly condemns this behaviour," states the spokesperson.
