Richmond RCMP is asking for the public’s help in finding the owner of an urn, discovered partially buried late last month in Terra Nova Park.

Mounties say the small pearl-coloured, polished urn was found the morning of Sept. 20 during a park clean-up.

It was found sitting in a plastic bag, partially buried in the soil, near a fence on the east side of the park.

Noel Payment, a member of a Richmond community volunteer clean-up group, said he found the urn on the West Dyke Trail in Terra Nova.

“We contacted the city, who sent a driver to pick it up,” said Payment.

A city worker then turned the urn over to police.

Furthermore, when the attending frontline officer opened the urn, she found what appeared to be cremated remains inside.

It’s not clear at this time how the urn ended up in the park, according to Richmond RCMP.

“Because it was wrapped in plastic and partially buried in the soil, it appears to have been placed there intentionally. But it seems like an odd place to leave the urn,” said Cpl. Ian Henderson with the Richmond RCMP.

Police say they are hoping the urn’s owner will come forward so that it can be returned for proper interment.

“I know if the urn contained my loved one – pet or otherwise – I wouldn’t want it moved about. I’d want it back,” said Henderson.

Anyone who may have information on this matter is asked to contact Richmond RCMP at 604-278-1212. To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
