'We're thrilled': Vancouver's new bus route is officially on the road

And other TransLink service changes in Metro Vancouver.

Update: April 17, 2023

TransLink officially launched the new Route 80 Monday morning, April 17.

The express bus will travel across the south of Vancouver from Marine Drive Station at Cambie Street to the River District.

TransLink says the new bus route was made possible by its Bus Stop Balancing program, wherein service on other routes is made faster and more efficient by eliminating certain less-used stops. The saved operating costs are then reinvested in new routes like this one.

The Route 80 bus now runs every 30 minutes on weekdays between 6 and 9 a.m. and between 3 and 6 p.m.

"The introduction of fast and frequent bus service connecting the River District with Marine Gateway is an important step forward for transit accessibility in South Vancouver," says Mayor Ken Sim in a press release. "The Marine Drive corridor is one of the fastest parts of our City – we're thrilled to have this significant increase in their transit services."

Several service changes take effect this month in Metro Vancouver, including a whole new bus route.

As of April 17, TransLink is implementing its Spring schedule. In anticipation of the warmer weather, 12 routes to outdoor destinations, including Stanley Park, will see increased service. A total of 68 bus routes will see adjustments to meet the seasonal demand.

But the real news is that the new route 80 bus will operate between the Marine Drive SkyTrain station and the River District near Boundary Road. The bus will trundle along South East Marine Drive every 30 minutes, from 5:30 to 9 a.m. and 3 to 6:30 p.m., and stop at eight stops along the way.

The route is expected to serve up to 500 travellers each weekday and is being introduced to complement the existing 100 and 31 bus routes.

"Fast and frequent transit between the River District and Marine Gateway will help businesses, commuters, and residents alike," says Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim in a media release. "This is an important and rapidly growing corridor in our city; we look forward to seeing the positive impacts that this new route will deliver."

Route 80 will be paid for through savings identified in TransLink's Bus Stop Balancing Program, according to CEO Kevin Quinn.

Transit service changes occur every January, April, June, and September based on seasonal patterns and trends in customer demand. Eight out of 10 respondents supported the launch of the new route, according to a 2019 TransLink survey.

Other TransLink spring service changes

Some routes in Metro Vancouver will see increases during busier times to offset reductions during off-peak times. Thirty-four routes across the region are being increased to address overcrowding, and 18 are being adjusted for the same reason.

Routes 32 and 480, which have been suspended for the past three years, will not be returning to service.

  • Due to construction impacting the trolley bus loop at UBC, routes 4 and 14 will be truncated at Blanca Loop until September 2023. During this period, the 99 will serve local stops along University Boulevard.
  • TransLink will be rerouting the 407 to provide new service along Lansdowne Rd. Some customers along Westminster Hwy, No. 3 Rd, Cook Rd, and Garden City Rd will need to connect to the 407 at new stops along Lansdowne Rd or take alternative services to their destination.

Nineteen routes in Delta, Surrey, White Rock, and Langley will see service increases, as will 345 King George Station/White Rock Centre during weekday peak times and route 147 Metrotown Station/Edmonds Station. Plus, additional service to Stanley Park, White Pine Beach, Lynn Canyon, and Grouse Mountain. For full details and schedule times, check the TransLink website.
