Vancouver has been ranked among the top cities in the Americas for its overall attractiveness as a tourist destination.

Euromonitor International has released its Top 100 Destinations Index 2021, which the company says "provides a comprehensive and multi-layered analysis of key and emerging city hubs."

The goal of the index is to help businesses and tourism organizations identify cities that show potential for strong tourism growth.

The index compares 54 different metrics across six key pillars for 100 city destinations, to create an overall city attractiveness score. These include: Economic and Business Performance; Tourism Performance; Tourism Infrastructure; Tourism Policy and Attractiveness; Health and Safety; and Sustainability.

There are 17 cities across the Americas represented in the 2021 report. Report authors note that the majority of cities are located in North America and that seven of the top 10 are U.S.-based.

"Performance of the U.S. cities is being driven by their progress across the Tourism Performance and Economic and Business Performance pillars," reads the report.

Honolulu is highlighted for showing tremendous improvement for both its international and domestic tourism comebacks. For instance, international arrivals grew by a staggering 124 per cent during 2021. "The government loosened travel restrictions for both foreign and domestic travellers once vaccination rates in Hawaii reached over 60 [per cent]."

Euromonitor International adds that Las Vegas was the most-impacted city in the United States in 2020 because of its dependence on tourism. In 2021, however, the city rose nine spots as the "gambling sector rebounded."

Most Latin American cities in the Top 100 City Destinations Index 2021 saw positive movements during 2020, notably Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro and Cancún.

Vancouver made it in the top 10, landing ninth, and ranked sixth in the world for its health and safety.
