Vancouver firefighters were called to two early morning fires on Saturday (May 13) at a Vietnamese restaurant on Main Street and the Sandman Hotel in Downtown Vancouver.

Vancouver firefighters had a busy Saturday (May 13) morning.

Vancouver Fire Rescue Services (VFRS) crews were called to two early morning fires, the first at a restaurant and the second at a hotel.

The first two-alarm blaze started inside a Vietnamese restaurant near Main Street and 32nd Avenue just after 4:30 a.m. Heavy smoke and flames were seen coming through the roof.

Firefighters were able to keep the flames from spreading to neighbouring buildings but the front and back of the restaurant are deemed unsafe.

As of 9:15 a.m. VFRS were still on scene putting out fiery patches on the outside of the building. Vancouver police were also present.

The restaurant was vacant at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.

Around an hour later, around 5:30 a.m., a dumpster caught fire on the side of the Sandman Hotel on West Georgia Street in the downtown core.

The fire was elevated to a two-alarm blaze due to "the amount of flames and smoke coming from the back of the building," says Asst. Chief Ken Gemmill. "They wanted to make sure it didn't enter the building."

Hotel occupants were evacuated at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.

The cause of both fires is undetermined.
