'It doesn't really count as a heat wave': Stretch of warm, sunny days forecast for Metro Vancouver

"It'll be, I would say, a pleasant summer day for Friday and Saturday."

Metro Vancouver's seven-day forecast shows a long stretch of pleasant days ahead with sun and some heat.

As the recent system leaves the region, a ridge of high pressure is building over southwestern B.C., according to Environment Canada meteorologist Matt Loney.

"That's going to allow temps to climb a bit," he tells V.I.A. "We're looking at temperatures in the mid-20s close to the water and high-20s inland."

Friday and Saturday heat

Friday (July 11) and Saturday temperatures will be well above the normal for this time of year, with highs around 24 C near the water and in the upper 20s inland. The humidity may make it feel even warmer.

"It'll be, I would say, a pleasant summer day for Friday and Saturday," Loney says.

Skies will stay clear at night as well, with lows around 15 C. Not much of a breeze is expected, even by the water.

Marine air takes the edge off

Heading into Sunday, skies will remain sunny, but an upper trough is expected to swing through the area, bringing marine air with it. Cooled by the ocean, it'll mitigate temperatures a bit.

"I would say it's going to be closer to 22 to 23 C the way it looks right now," says Loney. "And probably similar for Monday."

Some marine clouds may form late Sunday, but are more likely Monday Morning, he adds. However, no precipitation is in the forecast.

"Even in this kind of pattern, there's nothing suggesting showers that I could hang my hat on for the next 10 days," says Loney.

Forecast for next week

Once the upper trough continues on its way on Monday, things are expected to warm up again.

"Things should rebound early next week," says Loney. "Temperatures will probably jump again for the middle of next week."

Highs of 25 C are currently forecast for areas near the ocean.

Not a heat wave

While temperatures are getting higher than normal, Loney says it's not reaching heat wave levels.

"It doesn't really count as a heat wave," he says of the long stretch of sunny weather. "We're not really expecting that at all."
